-Hattie Nielsen was born in Butte, Montana and her family emigrated to Canada in 1948. The lived in Horsefly, British Columbia and then settled in East Pine near Dawson Creek. Hattie left home at age 18 and found work at the Summit Lake Lodge on the Alaska Highway Mile 392 and then in Whitehorse at the Circle Cafe at the top of Two Mile Hill. She met and married Eric Nielsen and they had two children Karen and Jens. Hattie painted scenes of cabins, mountains and fireweed on gold pans and sold them through Murdoch's store on Main Street. She also painted on canvas and other mediums. She painted a mural on the old Regina Hotel os a winter scene with horses and a sleigh about to depart for Dawson.
