Isaac Liard Gillespie served in the Riel Rebellion as a boy.((Library and Archives Canada, Attestation Paper, WWI Reg. # 2004539. October 2, 1916 in Atlin.)) He is listed as being a miner in Atlin and a policeman.((Yukon Genealogy website: Isaiah L. Gillespie, miner, Atlin; Isaac Liard Gillespie, policeman, GOV 1654, f. 29600-B (7/7).)) He described himself as a painter living in Atlin when he enlisted in 1916 to serve in the First World War.((Library and Archives Canada, Attestation Paper, WWI Reg. # 2004539. October 2, 1916 in Atlin.)) He had mining claims in the area at the time and they were exempted from cancellation during the war.((Letter from Burton Mining Recorder to Dept of Interior, 24 November 1920.
