Frank Allen Frank Allen was the boxing instructor of the California Athletic Club. He came to Dawson in 1898 to take part in a series of boxing matches. His opponent was Frank Raphael, a young boxer from the Pacific coast, who defeated Sam Maxwell in San Francisco in a ten-round fight. The Allen – Raphael match was to take place on 30 June 1898 for a bet of $5,000 each and gate receipts. The fights took place in a building behind the Horseshoe Saloon.
