She represented Yukon in curling at the Scott Tournament of Hearts and was a volleyball player at the Artic Winter games and the Canada Winter Games. Buckway was elected to the Whitehorse city council in 2003 and served as the mayor of Whitehorse from 2006 to 2012. She was the president of the Association of Yukon Communities for two terms, and an executive member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. She was a task force member for the Review of Yukon’s Police Force.
