Nellie Backstrom, nee Eikland Nellie Eikland was born at Pan Creek about fifty kilometres north of Beaver Creek. Her father came from Norway and her mother was Upper Tanana, born near the Yukon Alaska border north of Beaver Creek. Nellie and five siblings spent their childhood in Pan Creek, Snag, Sourdough, Haines Junction, and Beaver Creek. Nellie met and married Dwayne Backstrom in 1962 while she was living and working in Beaver Creek. She raised her children at home and then attended the Yukon Vocational and Technical Training Centre in Whitehorse in the 1970s where she acquired a certificate in secretarial training. She was employed with the federal government for fifteen years as a secretary and clerk in Alberta and Yukon. The Backstroms lived in many communities, volunteering on school boards, taking community club executive positions, made curling and hockey rinks, and sat on community planning boards and lobbied the government. They assisted in planning the north highway winter carnival for Beaver Creek, Burwash, Destruction Bay, and Haines Junction. When the Snag Airport closed in 1966, Dwayne's work moved to Destruction Bay, Whitehorse, Edmonton and back to Whitehorse where they retired to South M'Clintock, Marsh Lake. Nellie and Dwayne Backstrom were named Mr. and Mrs. Yukon during the 2014 Sourdough Rendezvous.(("Marsh Lake couple will be festival ambassadors." //Whitehorse Star// (Whitehorse), 22 January 2014.))
