Arthur Carter (1875 – 1937) Arthur Carter was born at Wortley, Leeds, England. He was a long-time resident of the Mayo district. He started working for Elmer Middlecoff on Highet Creek in 1911 and was still working there in 1914 when he enlisted as soon as the First World War broke out. He paid his own way to Vancouver to become a reservist with the Imperial Army.((Linda E.T. MacDonald and Lynette R. Bleiler, //Gold & Galena.// Mayo Historical Society, 1990: 355.)) Carter wrote to the Yukon Government from the 56th Overseas Battalion on 15 December 1915 regarding his application to have his mineral claim held free from cancellation for the duration of the war. His claim, //Sara,// was on Galena Creek in the Duncan mining district. The Duncan Creek mining recorder then recorded the certificate of overseas service against the Sara claim to keep it safe from cancellation.((Yukon Archives, GOV 1654, f.29600-B 2(7).)) Arthur Carter returned to the Yukon in May 1919.((Yukon Archives, GOV 1654, f.29600-B 2(7).)) He was working as the orderly and janitor at the old Mayo hospital around 1930.
