Carsten and Harris Carsten and Harris ran a roadhouse at Quartz Creek. It was normal for roadhouse proprietors to keep the roads around their locations in good repair. In January 1904, the Superintendent of Works and Buildings, Bertrand, made an agreement for them to keep surface glaciation at bay.
