George Chan (1933 – 2021) George Chan was born in the district of Taishan, China. One of his childhood tasks was to watch the sky and warn if the weather was turning bad so the drying rice could be taken in. George came to Canada in 1933 to work for his aunt and uncle (Harry and Lilly) at the Hollywood Café in Whitehorse. George saved enough money to bring his fiancé Susan from Hong Kong and they were married in Vancouver in 1958. His uncle Harry died in 1961 and the Hollywood Café burned down on Christmas Day. He worked at the Whitehorse Hospital and then operated the Casa Loma, Circle Café, Dixie Lee Fried Chicken, and the Copper King kitchens before moving to Vancouver in 1971. In 1977 he returned to the Yukon and bought the McCrae Restaurant. He had to retire to the south to Burnaby in 1995, due to ill health, and he leased the restaurant first to his nephew Yuck Soon (Edson) and his wife Janet and then to Wing and Su Lee. He sold the property in 2012 to Petro-Canada. In his later years, George’s weather predictions were better than the official Vancouver office.((“George Chan.” //Yukon News// (Whitehorse), 30 July 2021.))
