Hock “Splotus” Dennis Hock Dennis worked on the British Yukon Navigation Co. boats from 1906 to about 1916. He hired on as a cook and musician. He played the banjo and sang songs that he composed. When the Barringtons sold the Side Stream Navigation Company in 1916, Dennis followed Syd Barrington to Anchorage and hired on as cook on his new gas boat, the //Hazel B. Dennis was one of the few, or maybe the only black man to crew on the Yukon River fleet.
