Sandor Istvan Elek (1944 - 1993) Sandor Elek Sr. was born in Hungary. He trained as an airplane mechanic and was a good boxer. He was a young boy during the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 and decided to leave his home in the early 1960s. He and a friend hid in the cockpit of an airplane for thirteen hours and landed in Cairo, Egypt. They spent a year in a refugee camp in Greece before emigrating to Montreal, Quebec. He had an ear for languages and could speak Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Greek, French, and English. He met his future wife, Glenys, when she was visiting from Liverpool, England. He drove a cab and retrained as a heavy duty mechanic. They moved west and Sandor worked at Cassiar until he tired of cold weather mechanics. They moved to Whitehorse and Sandor took a new business on the road, selling jeans and cowboy boots in Faro. He and Glenys were a team for over twenty years, owning and running more than six businesses: Qwanlin Shoes, Workwear North, Kelly’s Electronic World, Chelsea Girl, Busy Bee Drycleaners, and the Main Man.((Nellie Dale, “Sandor Istvan Elek: Energetic Entrepreneur.” //Whats Up Yukon,// 4 October 2012.))
