Hamilton took out a lot of gold from French Joe's Bar on the Fortymile River in 1888. French Joe took it over after that and mined it out.((Michael Gates, "Fortymile River Sequence.” 1999: 8.)) In the spring of 1894, Howard Hamilton was running a tunnel on Canyon Creek, a tributary of the Fortymile, to tap the bedrock at a considerable depth.((“From the far-away Yukon.” //The Northwest Mining Review// (Spokane, Washington), 1 April 1894.)) Hamilton was at the founding meeting of the Yukon Order of Pioneers, held on 1 December 1894. He seconded a motion from C.
