John Hislop (1856 – 1901) John Hislop was born in Galt, Ontario and graduated from McGill University as a civil engineer. He was hired as assistant to Erastus Hawkins, Chief Engineer on the White Pass & Yukon Route railway construction project.((Roy Minter, //The White Pass: Gateway to the Klondike.// Toronto: McClelland and Stewart, 1987: 153)) Hislop was in charge of all the survey crews during construction, and he became Chief Engineer when Hawkins was promoted.((S.H. Graves, //On the White Pass Pay-Roll.// New York: Paladin Press, 1908: 43, 48, 55.)) Hislop was the first mayor of Skagway and president of the city council from 1900 to 1901. He died in Chicago when he was on his way to meet his fiancé.
