Jeff Hunston (b. 1951) Jeff Hunston was born in Winnipeg and his family moved to Drumheller soon after. In 1960, the Hunstons moved to Dawson and Jeff became a prime mover in the Dawson Junior Historical Society. After his first year at the University of Calgary, Hunston worked on a summer dig in the Queen Charlotte Islands (now Haida Gwaii). He decided to take up archaeology as a course of study and graduated with a BA in 1976. He then went to Simon Fraser and received an MA degree with his thesis on the Moosehide site near Dawson. He moved back to the Yukon in 1981 and started work as staff archaeologist for the Council of Yukon Indians (CYI), now Council for Yukon First Nations (CYFN). He worked chiefly on land claims.((Yukon Historical & Museums Association newsletter, 1988, #4.)) Jeff was the president of the Yukon Historical & Museums Association (YHMA) in 1983-94. He was laid off by CYI in 1985 when funds ran dry and was then hired as the Beaufort Archaeologist, working on the North Slope and Hershel Island. That program ran out in March 1988 and then Jeff was hired as the first full-time archaeologist for the Yukon Government Heritage Branch. After director Dale Perry resigned, Hunston acted in the position and was then appointed as head of the Yukon Heritage Branch.((Yukon Historical & Museums Association newsletter, 1988, #4.)) Jeff Hunston was the Manager of Heritage Resource for the Yukon Department of Tourism and Culture, Cultural Services when he retired in 2018.
