Peter and Scotty Hoffman Peter and Scotty Hoffman had a farm on Crag Lake for nine years before they moved to Carcross. They started out with one goat and twelve chickens and at one point they had nine goats, five of whom they were milking. They yielded 4-5 gallons of milk a day. They made cheese and yoghurt and sold the extra milk. Then they went into the pig business and had thirty-nine pigs that they raised, butchered, and sold. The killing part was not to their liking and a slaughterhouse in Whitehorse would have been convenient. By 1998, their operation was scaled down to sixty assorted chickens that laid 3-5 dozen eggs depending on their mood. Scottie also sold duck and goose eggs in Whitehorse and Carcross. After they got rid of the goats, Scottie turned her hand to gardening and plans for a pick-your-own fruit farm. Prior to planting, she spent five years building up the soil that is part of the Carcross Desert. For three years, she harvested 600-800 lbs. of potatoes from 800 square feet, and had numerous heads of lettuce, cabbage, spinach, carrots, and peas.((Yukon Archives, Yukon Agriculture fonds, Box 4, Farm Profiles 1998, 12/23.))
