Velma Doris Hull, nee Lyons (1932 – 2021) Vel Hull was born on the family farm near Lousana, Alberta to parents William and Winnifred Lyons. She joined the RCAF at age twenty and worked as a lead teletype operator in Falkenbridge, Ontario. She met Red Hull in Sudbury and they were married in 1955. In 1958, Red was hired from Alberta to work in the Keno mines and Vel and their two daughters moved up to Keno City to live. She drove up in June with her brother-in-law, pregnant sister, and their two sons and encountered a huge fire burning at Fireside. Vel was to make fifty-seven trips up and down the Alaska Highway over the next years.((“Velma Doris Hull.” Yukon News (Whitehorse), 26 November 2021.)) In 1960, the family moved to Calumet and Vel’s son was born in Mayo. In 1962, they moved to Quebec but returned to the Yukon within a year and settled in Carcross. Vel sold Avon products, was a volunteer firefighter and fire chief in Carcross, worked for the Department of Public Works, the Whitehorse Post Office, and for Yukon Government Supply and Services. Red and Vel owned The Bicycle Repair Centre for fourteen years. Vel was working for the Yukon Visitors Centre at the end of her life. She enjoyed many sports and hobbies and crocheted hats for new-borns at the Whitehorse General Hospital. She and Red took winter trips to Arizona and danced at the Legion or wherever Hank Karr was playing.
