James Kelly (~1870 - 1912) James Kelly was a labourer and about forty-two years of age when he fell under the wheels of a Klondike Mines Railway train at Claim 23 Below on Bonanza Creek. The accident happened at 3 am. Both knees were crushed and his legs were virtually severed. He was probably attempting to get on one of the cars after the train had started and slipped to fall under the train. He was discovered by another man who walked up the tracks shortly after and he reported the accident to the Star Roadhouse. The news was telegraphed to Dawson to Manager E. A. Murphy and he had the train start back immediately from the Forks. The crew picked up the injured man and made it down to Dawson in forty-five minutes. Conductor P. Denny bound the bleeding stumps and put on tourniquets, and he got sheets and other material from the Roadhouse to make Kelly as comfortable as possible. However, Kelly had been lying on the tracks for an hour or so and his injuries were so serious that he died an hour after reaching the Good Samaritan hospital.(("Both Legs Cut Off: James Kelly Meets Horrible Death on Dawson Railway.” //Dawson News// (Dawson), //The Weekly Star// (Whitehorse), 23 August 1912.))
