Allan Russell Lister (1931 – 2019) Al Lister was born in Melville Saskatchewan to George and Nell Lister. He grew up in Winnipeg and moved to Whitehorse in the early 1950s. He worked in construction for thirteen years and during this time he married and had three children.((“Allan Russell Lister.” Providence Funeral Homes & Crematorium Inc., 2020 website: https://www.providencefuneralhomes.com/Obituary/Allan-Lister.)) Lister was employed at the Whitehorse Dam project that started on 1 November 1956. He was a crane operator for General Enterprises of Whitehorse. He helped to build the coffer dam; the crib structure built in the middle of the rapids to de-water the area required for the main dam. It was a little scary working in the middle with another crane beside him when the whole thing was shaking with the strong current. After the initial few weeks, Lister worked there only periodically when his crane was needed but he often visited to monitor the progress. When they shut the river off, the townspeople went down to look for things they had lost or to fish in the isolated ponds. The water was shut off completely for three or four days. The plan was to raise the water level in the new Schwatka Lake approximately fifteen metres.((Chuck Tobin, //Whitehorse Star// (Whitehorse), 14 November 2008.)) In 1966, Lister started his own business, Lister Motor Sports. In 1968, he and Collen McGuire married and they had one son. The Listers moved to Penticton in 1977 where they established a cherry orchard and owned and operated Colleen’s Coffee Kitchen with branches in Penticton, Kelowna, and Vernon. Al operated water systems, repaired small engines, helped manage the retail coffee business, and worked in the orchard. He was an enthusiastic cook and a private pilot.((“Allan Russell Lister.” Providence Funeral Homes & Crematorium Inc., 2020 website: https://www.providencefuneralhomes.com/Obituary/Allan-Lister.))
