Angus McLeod Angus McLeod was born in Scotland.((Ruth Gotthardt, //Ta'an Kwach'an, People of the Lake.// Whitehorse: Yukon Government/Northern Research Institute, 2000.)) In 1920, Angus was a mate on the sternwheeler //Casca// and at end of navigation was stationed at Lower Laberge to look after the White Pass & Yukon Route fleet of boats.((//The Whitehorse Star// (Whitehorse), 5 November 1920.)) That year, the //Canadian// and //Whitehorse// sailed to Hootalinqua at the end of October. The plan was that the //Canadian// would be put on the ways at Hootalinqua and the //Whitehorse// would return, with the //Canadian// crew, to Lake Lebarge where she would wait for the //Nasutlin.// The //Nasutlin// would go into winter quarters at Lebarge, and the //Whitehorse// would bring all the crews up to Whitehorse.((//The Whitehorse Star// (Whitehorse), 29 October 1920.)) Angus worked as a deckhand on the Yukon River sternwheelers in the summer and ran the mail from Whitehorse to Livingstone by dog team in the winter. He and his wife Kitty lived at Lower Laberge for many years. In early April 1921, watchman Angus McLeod was engaged in salvaging the frozen-in machinery and fittings from the sternwheeler //Selkirk.// The work was slow as it involved the use of pick and shovel.((//The Whitehorse Star// (Whitehorse), 15 April 1921.)) In the 1920s, Angus and Kitty with other Ta'an people operated a fox and mink ranch at Lur dayel (31 Mile) on the Overland Trail.
