Mary McDiarmid, nee Johnson (1917-2000) Mary Johnson was born in her parent's cabin at Ethel Lake. She was raised by her grandparents, Charlie and Maise Turgeon, after her mother died. Her grandparents also raised her cousins, Rose Zeniuk and Ruth MacDonald. Mary married Elmer Land Middlecoff Jr. and they had children Jean and Roy. Middlecoff died in an accident when he was bar mining on the Stewart River.((//The Klondike Sun// (Dawson), 12 September 2000.)) Mary first met Jack McDiarmid in 1931 when he was mining on the Stewart River and met him again in 1936 when he was working for the Elsa mine. They were married and had children Beryl, Alan, and Joe. Their marriage was a partnership and they did everything together. Mary worked in the steam laundry in Dawson when Jack had medical problems and could not work. They mined on the Stewart River and at Barker Creek, and they had cabins at Stewart Crossing and Ethel Lake. Mary and Jack constructed the Stewart Crossing Lodge and operated it until 1966. They employed many people in the region. They then purchased the North Star Motel in Mayo and operated that until 1974. Mary is buried at Ethel Lake.
