Alex Nicol (1880-1965) Alex Nicol came over the Chilkoot Pass in 1898 at the age of eighteen and was one of the first stampeders to reach the Klondike. He was also among the first to stampede to Duncan Creek and staked No. 35 Below Discovery. In the winter of 1902-03 he worked on the government shaft. He heard that the government might build a road to Mayo Landing, and he built a cabin there in the winter of 1902/03 before the surveyors even arrived. He freighted supplies into Haggart and Highet creeks and Dublin Gulch from 1910 to 1915. In 1913 he hauled ore for Jack Alverson and Grant Huffman from the Silver King mine for $50 per ton. Nicol was one of the early stakers in Keno Hill and he bought and sold claims in that area until his death in 1965. The Cantins and Nicol owned barns and freighting headquarters in Mayo.((Linda E.T.
