Douglas Raymond Smarch Jr. Doug Smarch was raised by parents Doug and Jane Smarch in the traditional lifestyle of the Inland Tlingit.((“Doug Smarch.” Santa Fe Art Institute, 2020 website: https://sfai.org/alumni/doug-smarch/.)) He is a member of the Kookhitaan (Raven) Clan. He learned stone, bone, and wood carving in his home community of Teslin before leaving home for more education. He earned an Associates of Fine Arts degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts in 1999. He was the first recipient of the TC Cannon Scholarship Award and In 2001 received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Arts Institute. In 2004, he completed a master’s degree in design media arts at the University of California in Los Angeles. He has travelled the world studying art and cultures. His conceptual and installation art is found internationally in public and private collections.
