Keith Wolfe Smarch, Shakoon (Mountain Bird) (b. 1961) Keith Wolfe Smarch was born in Whitehorse to Tlingit and German parents and is a member of the Killer Whale clan. Smarch is a master carver living in Carcross. He studied Tlingit art in British Columbia under Dempsey Bob and Freda Diesing. He has studied wood carvings in Alaska and Japan. He was the first carver to receive recognition for his work outside the Yukon. Keith Wolfe Smarch is known as a traditional artist but has also created new visions based traditional themes. He considers passing on his skills and knowledge as important as his art, and he works in schools and with museums.
