Lena Slang, nee Rudolf (1929-2021) Lena Slang was born and grew up on the Nisutlin River, seventy miles from Teslin to parents Mabel and Herman Rudolf. [Kukhlittan Clan] After finishing school, Lena worked for many years in a grocery store in Atlin and later opened her own café, Lena’s Place. She met Rolf Slang, who came from Norway to search for gold in the Yukon in 1954, and they were married in Teslin in 1961. They lived in Atlin and then moved to Whitehorse where they owned a gas station and tire shop. The had twin babies, Gale and Gary, in 1962 and son Hans in 1965.((“Obituary.” //Deslin Neek,// Issue 62, April 2021: 22.)) The Slang family moved to Teslin in 1965 and Rolf built the Yukon Motel. They operated the business for seven years and Lena became well known for her homemade pies. She was also a skilled knitter, oil painter, and cake decorator. Lena and Rolf sold the motel in 1973 and retired to Kelowna. They liked to travel, and, among other adventures, they lived in a motor home in Costa Rica for three years. They moved back to Kelowna in 1979 and Rolf died at the age of 80 (1923 - 2004). Lena lived alone after that, supported by many friends and family and her strong faith in God.((“Obituary.” //Deslin Neek,// Issue 62, April 2021: 22.))
