Marion Schmidt Marion Schmidt was raised in Seattle and became a Canadian citizen. In the mid-seventies she had a home in Vancouver and a small farm in California. Marion and Harold Schmidt were married in 1941 and that’s when she started mining. They worked together on Jack Wade Creek and then they moved to Quartz Creek. In the mid-1970s, Marion Schmidt and employee Ben Strand were operating Ballerat Mines on Dominion and Quartz creeks outside of Dawson. Marion owned forty-eight clams and leased the remainder. Before he died, Harold made a plan for mining on Dominion and Marion was following the plan.((Jack Hope, //Yukon.// Prentice-Hall, 1976: 16.)) The Schmidt Family Foundation was established by the Schmidt family in memory of Marion and Harold Schmidt and their son Craig Anthony.
