Friedrich “Frederick” Trump (1869 – 1918) Friedrich Trump was born in Kallstadt, Bavaria. His father, Christian Johannes Trump died in 1877, leaving the family heavily in debt from his medical expenses. Friedrich apprenticed as a barber and immigrated to New York around 1880. In 1891, he moved to Seattle and started a restaurant in Pioneer Square. He sold the restaurant in 1894 and moved to Monte Cristo, Washington where exciting new mineral discoveries had been made. He staked a claim, built a boarding house, and was elected justice of the peace in 1896. In 1897, he moved back to Seattle and opened another restaurant. By early 1898 he had enough money to travel to the Yukon.((“Frederick Trump.“ //Wikipedia,// 2020 website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Trump.)) Trump and Ernest Levin opened a tent restaurant along the trail and were in Bennett in May where they opened the Arctic Restaurant and Hotel. It started in a tent and soon occupied a two-story wood frame building. In 1900, after the railway was completed to Whitehorse, the partners moved there and opened the successful White Horse Restaurant and Inn.((“Frederick Trump.“ //Wikipedia,// 2020 website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Trump.)) Ernest Levin was often in court facing charges of disorderly conduct with his lawyer Willard Phelps. Sometimes friends attested to his good character and he was let off, but he paid fines and did some hard labour.((Jane Gaffin, “Trumps’ riches spring from the Yukon.” //Yukon News// (Whitehorse), 23 October 1992.)) Trump sold his share of the business to Levin in 1901 and returned to Kallstadt a wealthy man. He and Elizabeth Christ were married in August 1902. They moved to New York, then Germany, and then back to New York. In 1908, Trump started buying land and continued through the First World War years. In May 1918, he contracted the Spanish flu and died quickly. His wife and son Fred continued managing the family land under the business Elizabeth Trump & Son.((“Frederick Trump." //Wikipedia,// 2020 website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Trump.)) The family built a dynasty as land developers over the next three decades.
