Milos Tadich (1887 – 1960) Milos Tadich was better known in Whitehorse as Big Russian Mike. He came to the Yukon in 1910 and worked as a miner. He was a huge man for the day, being over six foot four inches. He joined George Black's Yukon Machine Gun Co. in 1916 and served overseas.((Pat Ellis, //Whitehorse Star// (Whitehorse, 25 October 2017.)) His attestation paper described him as a Dawson miner originally from Montenegro. WWI Reg. #1015633. July 1, 1916, in Sidney. Attestation Paper, Library and Archives Canada)) Tadich fought overseas with The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada along with other Serbian Canadians, most of whom were born in Montenegro and Serbia.((“Serbian Canadians.” //Wikipedia,// 2020 website: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbian_Canadians)) Tadich sustained a head injury in the war and returned to the Yukon as a walking wounded. He lived on a small pension in a trailer near the Yukon River. He had one bunk for himself and three for his many dogs. They were well behaved, walking behind him like a regiment. He showered them with choice cuts of meat from Burns butcher shop. He had as many as nine, but only three (Bum, Fox and Skipper) when he died at age 73. The legion looked after his burial in the Whitehorse Pioneer Cemetery. The dog catcher looked after his favourite pet Bum.((Pat Ellis, //Whitehorse Star// (Whitehorse, 25 October 2017.)) In 1996, Jim Robb published a photo of Russian Mike walking with six of his dogs.((Jim Robb, “The Colourful Five Percent.” //The Whitehorse Star// (Whitehorse), 9 February 1996.))
