Donald John Urquhart (1924 – 1952) Donald John Urquhart was born in Salmon Arm, British Columbia to parents Elva Mamie (Hutton) and John Kenneth Urquhart. He enlisted in March 1943 in Vancouver to serve in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. His citations included the War Medal 1939-45, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp.((Canadian Virtual War Memorial, 2020 website: https://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/memorials/canadian-virtual-war-memorial/detail/80003621)) \\ Flying Officer Urquhart crashed his P-51 Mustang bomber into Teslin Lake in July 1952. Urquhart was a reservist attached to the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 402 City of Winnipeg [Fighter Bomber] Squadron. The plane was equipped with two 500-pound bombs and Urquhart was conducting a practice bombing run with a dozen other Mustangs. The planes flew from Watson Lake 250-km to Teslin Lake to target a raft floating in the middle of the lake. As he had done many times before, Urquhart went up to 9000 feet and began a vertical dive but instead of releasing his bombs at 2,000 feet, he plunged into the lake. A fellow pilot in the squadron surmised that Urquhart was mesmerized by the target. He remembered Urquhart as the life of the party at officers’ mess in the evenings. He was piano player and entertainer.((Kenyon Wallace, "Remembering Canada's forgotten veterans." //National Post,// 28 January 2011.))
