John Owen “Jack” Williams (~1869 - 1911) Jack Williams was born in Wales and left home at age fifteen to become a sailor. He visited many ports in the world, came to the west coast in 1892, and settled in Victoria. He started coming north every year in 1900 and worked on the riverboats or in the shipyard. In 1910, he served as mate on the steamer //Whitehorse.// He left Whitehorse that fall with friend Malcolm McAskell and they both worked in Prince Rupert for the winter. When he died, in April 1911, Williams was working in the Whitehorse shipyard, was on the board of the Whitehorse hospital, and owned real estate in Vancouver. Williams was found to have growths in his brain that had been causing severe headaches, and he was diagnosed as having died from tuberculosis of the brain [brain tumours].((“In Prime of Life.” //The Weekly Star// (Whitehorse), 28 April 1911.))
