Steven Arbutina (d. ~1967)

Steve Arbutina was born in Austria and came to the Mayo district with his uncle around 1910. He was a chef by profession. He worked on Highet Creek for Elmer Middlecoff in 1913 and 1917. He lived at Minto Bridge, trapping and prospecting in the Mayo Lake area and also cut wood for sale. He was a hermit who rarely came to town. He had a cabin in the Nelson Creek area, another at the foot of Mayo Lake, and one at his prospect on the Lookout Mountain Road (Mt. Haldane) near the summit.1)

When Brodie Hicks knew him, he was living at his cabin on the Roop Arm of Mayo Lake. He came to the Northern Commercial Company once a summer to trade his furs and buy the next year’s supplies.2) He died at his cabin on Mayo Lake.3)
