Antoine Eugene Joseph “Tony” Caron (1940 - 2014)
Tony Caron was born in Kirkland Lake to Mary Louise and Eugene Caron. His father was a diamond driller, and they often moved to where he could work, living throughout Ontario and Nova Scotia. Tony started working in construction at a young age. He and first wife Betty lived in Montreal where their first daughter Ann was born in 1964. The family moved to the Yukon and Sharon was born in 1974. Tony came to the Yukon in 1966 to work on a short-term drilling program with his father. That job led to another, and the family established E. Caron Diamond Drilling. Tony was a main driving force for the company, and he took over the business when his father died in 1978. He worked closely with his nephew Konn. After Konn and Maureen were married in 1989, Maureen joined the company. Tony was a larger-than-life figure in the mining world. He was a workaholic and the go-to guy when things went awry, but he was always available to share a coffee. He loved a party and played hockey until his knees gave out. He was never afraid of a fight and encouraged his daughters to be independent and strong.1)
