Hazel Annie Charlie (1948 – 1951)

Hazel Charlie was born to parents Big Salmon (d. 1971) and Leta Charlie (d. 1970) of the Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation. Hazel was taken to the Charles Camsell Indian Hospital for tuberculosis patients and died when she was three years old. She was buried in an unmarked grave. Her family tried for many years to locate her grave and finally was successful with the help of the Office of the Independent Special Interlocutor for Missing Children and Unmarked Graves and Burial Sites. With their support, the municipality of St. Albert found the grave location and helped the family set a headstone. Her name is now inscribed on a large monument at the St. Albert cemetery on the outskirts of Edmonton. The event marked closure for the family who tried for so long to locate her.1)
