Martin William Carroll III (1948 – 2024)

Martin Carroll was born in Weston, Ontario to James and Mary Carroll and grew up in CFB Bordon, Ontario where his father was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. Martin graduated in 1968, the same year his father retired and moved the family to Edmonton. Martin joined the Hudson’s Bay Company and was posted in Behchoko, Tulita and briefly in Deline. He met Ruth Vaneltsi and there married in Edmonton in 1970. They soon moved to Watson Lake and then later moved back to Fort McPherson. Martin started work for the Northern Canada Power Commission (NCPC) and began training in steam engineering.1)

Martin was transferred to Inuvik and then Aklavik where the family spent many years. Martin served as the mayor, justice of the peace, coroner, and found his way back into the church. The family moved to Whitehorse in 1986, and Martin began working for Yukon Electric. They attended the Old Log Church where Martin helped Deacon Effie Linklater. After Martin got his lay ministry papers, he and Ruth went to Saskatchewan and martin got his BA in Biblical and General Studies at Briercrest Bible College.2)

After graduating, Martin and Ruth moved to Inuvik where Martin was ordained as a priest, and then they moved to Old Crow for a year. In 2004, they settled in Whitehorse and Martin continued working with the Church, the Adult Resource Centre and the Whitehorse Corrections Centre (WCC). Martin retired as chaplain at the WCC in 2021 and daughter Lucy-Anne began working there. Rev. Carroll is remembered as a kind and giving man.3)
