Allan Duncan (1908- 1998)
Allan Duncan was born in Winnipeg and graduated as an MD from the University of Manitoba in 1931. He was a post-graduate student at Winnipeg General Hospital until 1933.1) He moved north that year to practice in Mayo and then had his practice in Whitehorse from 1935 to 1937 before he moved to Dawson after Dr. Nunn died.2) Dr. Allan Duncan and Dr. Snider provided medical and dental care to isolated communities in the Yukon from 1933 to 1947.( (Allan Duncan fonds, Yukon Archives.)) Allan was a brother to Dr. Barrie Duncan, the resident doctor in Dawson from September 1945 to August 1951. Allan continued to visit Dawson after 1947 to perform elective surgery.3)
In 1989, Dr. Duncan wrote a memoir of his time in the Yukon and Raincoast Books has published numerous editions of Medicine, Madams and Mounties: Stories of a Yukon Doctor 1933 – 1947.
