Donowak

Donowak was the tlukwaxadi chief from Yendestake whose clan controlled the Chilkat Pass. He persuaded his kin that lessening the blockade might have advantages as the Cassiar gold rush was bringing people into the country and there could be work packing supplies. He insisted that the trade monopoly belonged to his people and the prospectors were allowed only ten cents worth of tobacco, enough to buy caribou hide to mend their clothing. The prospector's packs were inspected on their return for contraband furs. The jealous ganaxtedi and daqlawedi clans of Klukwan, who owned the Chilkat Pass, held out longer than the Chilkoots.1)
