Janet Dickson (d. 2023)
Janet Dickson attended business college and then went to work for a Calgary brokerage firm where she became fascinated with the mining industry.1)
Janet Dickson met Gordon Dickson in Vancouver, and they married before moving to the Yukon in 1967. Gordon was a prospector, and Janet soon grew to enjoy it as well.2) In 1975, they staked quartz mining claims on Dublin Gulch near Mayo.3) The Eagle Gold Mine was eventually developed on Dublin Gulch ground held by the Dicksons.4) They sometimes optioned mineral claims to companies in exchange for stocks and that proved a lucrative arrangement.5)
After Gordon passed away in 1993, Janet held hundreds of claims at Mount Nansen and Dublin Gulch and she made options and royalty agreements with mining companies and a junior exploration company.6) Janet continued to identify rich mineral claims and she gained an impressive record of staking and maintaining the claims, and then driving a hard bargain with exploration companies. In 1996, she was the first woman to receive the Yukon Prospectors’ Association (YPA) Prospector of the Year Award.7) YPA President Mike Power listed Janet’s accomplishments including her role in prospecting the Mount Nansen area where her claims became part of BYG’s property for mine development and her intension of putting a junior company on the stock market.8)
