Ellen Lorraine Eby, nee Haughland (b. 1933)

Ellen Eby was born in northern Saskatchewan near the village of Smeaton. In 1951 she moved to Trail, British Columbia where she completed her Grade 13 and then graduated from Normal School in Victoria. She taught in Bollnet Hill near Prince George (1953-54), Lower Post (1954-55), and Watson Lake (1955-56). In 1956, she married Roy Eby who was stationed at the Watson Lake air base and they moved to the Mile 48 pumping station on the Haines Highway. Roy worked as a heavy equipment operator and their three children were born there. Ellen started teaching school in the community’s one-room schoolhouse in 1964 and stayed until 1969 when the station closed down. The Ebys moved to Whitehorse and in the fall of 1960 and Ellen was hired to teach at Whitehorse Elementary. She took a year off in 1981-82 and came back to teaching at Jack Hulland Elementary where she remained until she retired in 1994.1)
