Glen Everitt (b. 1954)
Glen Everitt was Dawson’s mayor from 1997 to 2004.1) He was awarded the Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 for his significant community work.2) In 2004, Everitt was president of the Association of Yukon Communities and was praised for doing more than any previous president to make Yukon issues known to the rest of Canada.3)
In 2004, there were allegations of financial misappropriation and the territorial government removed Everitt as mayor and took over the management of the city. In 2005, a forensic audit found $100,000 in misappropriation including $1,800 Everitt had put on a bar tab. In 2006, the government brought out a $3.4-million bailout to help pay for Dawson’s $5-million debt, and Dawson was able to elect the first mayor since Everitt’s removal. In 2007, the RCMP charged Everitt with two counts of breach of trust, two counts of fraud, and two counts of theft over $5,000. In 2009, Dawson sued Everitt for $43,000 in personal loans it says were made in 1997. Everitt denied the charges and counter-sued the city for $59,000 in unpaid overtime worked during his seven years as mayor. The city eventually dropped the suit. In 1910, Everitt pled guilty to one breach of trust and was sentenced to a 12-month conditional sentence and ordered to repay $38,000.4)
Everitt admitted to double-dipping on expense claims that were covered by his wife’s job with Parks Canada. He did the same with the Association of Yukon Communities by duplicating expense claims to the municipal government. He also made unauthorized payroll advances and withdrew cash on the city’s credit card. Judge Lilles noted that Everitt’s actions were neither devious or complex.5)
