Kate Eckervogt (1933 - 2017)

Kate Eckervogt was born in Wurstawaltersdorf, Germany (now Walin, Poland). She and her family left as refugees after the Second World War. She met Heinz, her future husband, in Berge, Germany. They left Germany in 1956 and lived for short times in Toronto, Sacramento, and Seattle before settling down at Dezadeash Lodge in 1970. They worked at placer mining and at small construction jobs and ran a restaurant in Haines Junction after they bought Blue Mountain Motel in 1983. They rebuilt and added a new motel unit “by way of” the Haines Junction General Store. They retired from the restaurant business in 1988 but continued mining until 1992. Kate Eckervogt died after a long battle with Alzheimer's and spent the last ten years of her life at Copper Ridge Place. She is survived by her sons Thomas (Lynn) and Martin.1)
