Alexander Clarke Fisher (1870 - 1941)
Alex Fisher was the brother of Bruce Fisher, resident of Silver City at Kluane Lake.1) Alex was the former master of the sternwheeler Lightning.2)
In 1906, Alex Fisher and Dr. Sugden purchased the holdings of W. L. Breeze at Claim 23, above the canyon on Burwash Creek.3) Fisher lived at a homestead on the west side of Kluane Lake where the boats docked for the Slims River trail. He fought in the First World War and was listed as a Kluane master mariner. He returned to the Yukon in July 1919.4)
Fisher prospected and mined for nearly twenty years on Sheep Creek, a tributary of the Slims River. He arrived in Whitehorse in 1924 with nuggets to buy supplies and was in a great hurry to return to the Kluane country.5) In March 1928, Fisher again visited Whitehorse this time with his season’s catch of furs. This was his first visit to town in three years.6)
In January 1941, Alex Fisher suffered a stroke and died before the plane arrived to take him to the Whitehorse hospital.7) Fisher’s grave marker is at the site of his cabin by Sheep Mountain.
