Phyllis Gail Forbes (1941 - 2009)

Phyllis Forbes was born in Saskatchewan and her family moved to Nipawin and then Prince Albert. She met Doc Forbes and they were married in Calgary in 1975, ten days after they met for the first time. They lived briefly in Fort McMurray and then moved to Faro in 1978. Phyllis was Housing Manager for Yukon Housing, Councillor for the Town of Faro for many terms, and the Mayor of Faro for one term.1)

A new municipal complex was developed during Forbes years on council. The community was divided on the development and Forbes was involved in the design and other major issues. She was adamant that the project come in on budget. The Association of Yukon Communities (AYC) awarded Phyllis Forbes the Hansiatuc Award for a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the Yukon municipal government and furthered the goals of the Association of Yukon Communities. The Association recognized the contributions she made in promoting Faro since 1978. Her widowed husband accepted the award to a standing ovation. Forbes died after a year-long battle with cancer.2)
