Francis Edmont Gane (1885 – 1916)

Francis Egmont Gane was born in Normanby, New Zealand. His family moved to Dawson in 1903, and he attended the Dawson high school. After school, he attended the University of Toronto and received a BA in 1912, and a Master’s degree in 1914. He became a lecturer at Manitoba College. Gane enlisted for service in the First World War in May 1915 and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the 43rd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. He was in command of a work party near Bllewaarde Lake in Belgium when he was killed by machine gun fire. He is buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground in Belgium.1)
