Isabel D. Greenwood (1908 - 2007)

Isabel Greenwood was born in Buffalo, New York and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Connecticut College. She came to Canada in 1930 and married Anglican minister Rev. Tom Greenwood in 1934. In 1935, she was the only woman in her class to graduate with a Doctor of Medicine from McGill University. That year, she and Rev. Greenwood became missionaries at Fort McPherson, NWT. Isabel worked as a medical doctor in the Dene community for the federal government (1934 – 1936).1)

The Greenwoods lived in England and returned to Canada to live in Fort McMurray, Yellowknife, Dawson, Whitehorse, and Kamloops before retiring in Ottawa. Isabel Greenwood spent a lifetime volunteering in church activities. She “always found ways to help build bridges between the work and mission of the church and the needs of the community.”2)
