Ruth Gruber (1911 – 2016)
Ruth Gruber was special assistant to the United States Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes during the Second World War. After the war, she carried out a study on the prospects of settling veterans in Alaska.1)
Dr. Ruth Gruber visited Whitehorse in 1943. She was in Whitehorse again in August 1945 after completing a survey through the Canadian Arctic. On the latter visit she was making a detailed report on the post-war possibilities of the Alaska Highway and left town to drive over the highway to Fairbanks.2) In 1946, Gruber returned to her former career of journalism.3)
