Berent Hougen
Berent Hougen was born in Norway. He came to the Yukon in 1906 and worked on the dredges in the Klondike. He stayed for six years before returning home. In 1944, Berent returned to the Yukon with his family of wife and seven children. He opened a store on Wood Street selling household products. His youngest son, Rolf, worked in the store before and after school. When he was nineteen Rolf took over the store and expanded into a larger building on Main Street where the Edgewater Hotel now sits.1)
