Gerry Hewitt (b. 1952)
Gerry Hewitt was eighteen and living in Yellowknife in 1970. He was involved in the inaugural Arctic Winter Games that year as an athlete in curling, his team took gold, and as a volunteer driving officials and organizers. He continued to compete in future Games as well as the Canada Winter Games and he served as a volunteer coach, official and in a variety of other capacities. His career brought him to Whitehorse in 1974.1)
Garry was a member of the Elks Lodge in Yellowknife and continued his membership in Whitehorse. He served in each position of the executive more than once on both the regional and national levels. During COVID, Garry worked with others to on some upgrades to the Whitehorse Elks’ Hall. He has been a volunteer on many Yukon organizations including Squash Yukon and Volunteer Bénévoles Yukon.2)
Gary was one of ten inductees into the new Order of Yukon on New Year’s Day in 2020. He was also awarded the Governor General’s volunteer award in 2020.3)
