Stacey Hassard

Stacey Hassard graduated from F.H. Collins Secondary School in Whitehorse. He worked in construction for fifteen years before purchasing and rebuilding the Nisutlin Trading Post in Teslin. His family ran the business for about ten years. Hassard served as a councillor and then deputy mayor for the Village of Teslin. He was a director on the Association of Yukon Communities (AYC). Hassard was elected Yukon Party MLA for the Pelly-Nisutlin riding in October 2011 and was re-elected in 2016 and served as the interim leader of the official opposition. The riding includeed Teslin, Faro, and Ross River.1) In May 2020, Currie Dixon was elected as the Yukon Party leader and Stacey ended his forty-four-month tenure as interim party leader. The party put off electing a new leader to give that person some momentum heading into an election.2)

In May 2021, Dixon removed MLAs Stacey Hassard (Pelly Nisutlin) and Wade Istchenko (Kluane) from standing committees and critic roles in the Yukon’s shadow cabinet after they posted inappropriate and misogynistic texts about all the party leaders.3) The offensive social media texts were accidently sent to Premier Silver who shared them with the media. Both Hassard and Istchenko issued apologies for their immature actions and committed to learning from their mistakes.4) Yukon First Nations, the Council of Yukon First Nations, and the Assembly of First Nations Yukon Region called for stricter measured against the men. They wanted to see Hassard and Istchenko suspended for some or all of Session 35 of the Legislative Assembly and have their pay given to Yukon organizations that work to combat systematic oppression. They also wanted to see all members of the Yukon Party take anti-bullying training and have Dixon uphold the standard of acceptable behaviour as outlined in a Respectful Workplace Policy.5)
