Stephan Herrmann (1924 – 2003)

Steve Herrmann came to the Yukon to work for Yukon Consolidated Gold Corp (YCGC) and later went to work at Clinton Creek after the company closed in the 1960s.1) He started a restaurant [Flora Dora] in the historic Monte Carlo building on Front Street in Dawson. The building suffered a fire in 1969, attributed to electrical causes. This was the second fire in its career. The first fire was in 1905 and the two-storey building became one when the first story was burned out and the upper story was lowered to the ground. A distinctive façade was added at this time. Herrmann was first registered as a part-owner of the building in 1973. In 1979 the Monte Carlo became a grocery store after the DCW Trading Post burned. After this brief stint, the building was turned into a seasonal business selling books, clothing, shoes, and gifts. The Monte Carlo burned for the last time in 1993 when it suffered complete devastation.2) Steve’s nephew, Ken Herrmann, had come north to help him run the businesses. Steve and Steve Coleman started the Dawson Hardware and then Herrmann bought out Coleman. Ken and Susan Herrmann bought out Steve and he semi-retired.3)
