Teleshore Joseph “Tom” Hebert (1870 - 1970)
Tom Hebert was born at Goose Bay, Newfoundland. He came to the Yukon in 1898 with the North-West Mounted Police under Inspector Primrose. He was an expert dog-handler and acted as a special constable on patrols and carrying the mail. He later prospected and mined in several parts of the territory and also operated a roadhouse on the Overland Trail. During the 1930s, he spent eight years prospecting in the Mayo and Keno area, and then moved to Dawson. He made one trip home to Newfoundland, planning to remain there, but returned to Dawson. Hebert became a resident of the St. Mary's nursing home in 1964 and was also made a life member of the YOOP in that year. He was confined to bed for the last three of his 100 years but remained cheerful.1)
