William Hair (1880 – 1919)
William Hair was born in Kilmalcolm, Scotland. He was a miner near Carcross in 1916 when he enlisted for service in the First World War.1) He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Whitehorse and became a private in the Yukon Infantry Company. In England he was taken on strength to the 7th Reserve Battalion at Seaford. He went on leave to visit relatives and was admitted to the 4th Scottish General Hospital in Glasgow where he died of pneumococcal meningitis. He was awarded the British War Medal and Allied Victory Medal. He is buried in the Post Glasgow Cemetery in Renfrewshire. Mount Hare [sic] near the NWT border is named in his honour.2)
