Dave Joe

Dave Joe is a citizen of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, born and raised in Klukshu. Joe was called to the Yukon bar in 1977 and in 1999 in British Columbia. He was chief negotiator for the Council of Yukon First Nations during the Yuko land claim process.1) Joe was named as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2008. He was chosen for his social service in building strong communities and positive relations between native and non-native peoples and for negotiating final land agreements for several First Nations. Joe was involved in 1973 with the initial call for a settlement of Yukon land claims and was still involved twenty-two years later when the first four agreements became part of the Canadian Constitution (Feb 14, 1995.) Joe has represented First Nations right across Canada.2) Dave Joe was one of Yukon’s first indigenous lawyers. He was one of ten inductees into the Order of Yukon on New Year’s Day in 2020.3)
